Infection and road-collision data shift to linked local reporting in same-day releases

The UKHSA's trust-level infection tables and DfT's road-collision linkage studies, published together, show a shared move toward more joined-up local statistics.

On 24 September, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Department for Transport (DfT) published separate data releases that give local areas more detail on infections and road casualties. UKHSA published annual counts and rates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, MSSA, Klebsiella species, E. coli and MRSA bacteraemia, and of C. difficile infections, broken down by NHS acute trust and sub-integrated care board location [1][2][3][4][5][11]. It also published norovirus and rotavirus surveillance reports for the 2026 to 2027 season, gastrointestinal infection outbreak statistics, childhood vaccination coverage for 2025 to 2026 and 2026 to 2027, and a quality and methodology report for healthcare-associated infection statistics [6][7][8][9][10].

On the same date, DfT published feasibility studies that link police-reported road collision records to other data sources. One study uses ambulance service data for one area as the first stage of a wider project with the Pre-hospital Research and Audit Network [12]. A second assesses matching STATS19 collision data to a road network, and a third links STATS19 fatalities to ONS death registration records [13][14].

Read together, the two sets of releases concern the same kind of reporting change: infection data are broken down by NHS trust and sub-integrated care board location, while road casualty statistics are being tested for linkage to ambulance, road-network and death-registration records [1][12][13][14].
