GCSE results issued across the West as bus ticket overhaul nears

New fares and a simplified ticket range begin on 30 August, ten days after GCSE results day across Bristol, Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

Students across Bristol, Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire received their GCSE results on 20 August 2026, BBC Bristol reported [4][9].

Schools including West Somerset College, The Castle School in Taunton, Nailsea School and Taunton School published their own results, the Somerset County Gazette, North Somerset Times and BBC Bristol reported [1][2][3][6]. The North Somerset Times reported that Nailsea School pupils achieved outcomes across 22 traditional and vocational subjects [3]. The Somerset County Gazette reported high achievers across the cohort at Taunton School [6].

A BBC Bristol video showed pupils across the West Country reacting to their grades [5][8].

First Bus said ticket changes across Somerset and the West of England, including Bristol and Bath, take effect on 30 August [7]. The standard single fare will rise from £2.40 to £2.60, while a £3 fare cap remains [7]. The West of England Plus adult day ticket will cost £9.50 and is available on the First Bus App or via Tap on Tap off capping [7]. Customers aged 16 to 21 and students can receive a 10% discount on eligible tickets, and children aged 5 to 15 can travel for 50% of the adult fare [7]. Weekly and monthly tickets will be sold only through the First Bus App or Tap On, Tap Off fare capping and no longer by drivers [7].

The changes take effect ten days after GCSE results day for students travelling in the region, according to BBC Bristol and First Bus [4][7].
